HOW TO RAPIDLY IMPROVE YOUR PICKLEBALL GAME BY AT LEAST 1.0 POINT, WHILE HAVING A TON OF FUN
How would you reply to the statement:
“The game of Pickleball is fast.”
Think about it for a second and answer it in your head real quick…
Typically when I have a new student, it’s one of the very first things I’ll say
It might sound crazy to say, but most of the times I can accurately guess their rating based on their response.
Let me explain:
The 3.0 – 4.0 player will usually reply in a way that references the physical game.
“The ball moves so fast, it’s hard to keep your eye on it”
“The points go by so quickly too”
“It is and I love the workout it gives”
While all those answers are 100% correct It illustrates to me that the player is still in a reactionary state of Pickleball play.
The physical elements of the game are at the forefront of their mind.
Being in a constant, unhinged reactionary state in Pickleball is detrimental to growth.
Conversely, when I make the same statement to 4.5 and 4.5+ students, the typical reply is something more cerebral:
“I know, I’ve been working on mental strategy to pre-design points”
“It’s mental speed chess”
“Yea, I’ve been trying to improve my mental decision tree imprint”
Too many of us learn PIckleball in a way that we find ourselves primarily in an unhinged and reactionary disposition.
I have a lot of thoughts as to why that is which I’ll save for another day (mostly based on how we begin playing Pickleball)
But for the most part, pickleball points are played rapidly and the common player is relying solely on reflex to orchestrate a point.
And you’re not here to be a “common” player 🙂
The truth is…
The speed of Pickleball makes it so you can’t possibly go through the rolodex of shot-options, mid-point, to determine the ideal play.
It has to be imprinted in your brain.
It does have to be reactionary, but it needs to be deliberately reactionary.
“Deliberate Reaction” can be imprinted through practice and experience on the court, of course.
But the short-cut is imprinting it through comprehensive knowledge of the game.
For instance, I coach that there are only TWO Options for the 3rd Shot
– 3rd Shot Drive
– 3rd Shot Dink
And that you ALWAYS want to return the 3rd shot to the person who returned the serve…
How you decide on the 3rd Shot Drive or 3rd Shot Dink is determined by your opponent’s return.
But the point is, people go on and on about 3rd Shot Options, but your mind doesn’t have time to process.
Following my advice your decision tree is consolidated to (2) for which shot to hit, and (1) for where to hit the 3rd Shot.
Every time you have a third shot your decision tree is clear, concise and proactive.
What’s even better is that every time you drill for 3rd Shots you know exactly the two shots you need to practice, over and over.
Of course this requires you to have the ability to strategize, be keenly and situationally aware and execute on fundamental mechanics…
But your actions and decisions are deliberate and premeditated.
Approaching the game in this way is crucial to take things to the next-level, whichever level that is.
